# Installing it

> Getting ScreenShepherd onto the Mac in your booth.

Download it from [screenshepherd.live](https://screenshepherd.live), open the
file, and drag **ScreenShepherd** into **Applications**. That is the whole
install.

  It is a big download — the voice it listens with is inside the app, so that
  it works on the day even if your church wifi does not. Once it is on the Mac
  it needs no internet at all.

Before you start, check the Mac can run it: [Requirements](/reference/requirements).
The one that catches people out is **macOS 14 or later**.

    file — leave it running.

    The usual way you install a Mac app.

    It opens normally — no warnings, no right-clicking.

    It asks for a licence key the first time. See

    Paste in the licence key from
    [screenshepherd.live](https://screenshepherd.live) and press **Activate**.
    Once per Mac.

## Allowing the microphone

macOS asks once, the first time it listens. Say yes.

If you said no, or someone else did, you can put it right: **general** →
**microphone** → **open system settings**.

## Updates

**It updates itself.** New versions download quietly in the background and are
in place the next time you open the app. Nobody is asked, and nothing
interrupts you.

It never updates during a service. If anyone is listening, it waits — and if a
service starts while a new version is still downloading, it stops and picks it
up another time.

You can also check by hand: **general** → **software update** → **check for
updates**.
