# If something looks wrong

> What to do, during a service, when the slides are not doing what you expect.

<Note>
  **The first thing to know:** you can always take over. Press **next** in
  ProPresenter and the right slide is up. Nothing you do here can make things
  worse, and stopping ScreenShepherd never stops ProPresenter.

## During the service

Find what you can see in the left column. Do what is in the right column. Do
not try to work out why — that can wait until afterwards.

| What you can see                                              | What to do                                                                                                                                           |
| ------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| The wrong slide is up, for any reason                         | Press **next** in ProPresenter. If you need to, then press **previous**. This sorts out almost everything.                                           |
| The band is repeating a chorus and the slide is stuck         | Press **next** once.                                                                                                                                 |
| It went to the wrong song                                     | Press **go back to** *(song)* in ScreenShepherd. Or just pick the right song in ProPresenter.                                                        |
| The words have gone off the screen during a long instrumental | This is normal, and it is a setting. They come back as soon as someone sings. See [Options](/setup/options) if you would rather it did not.          |
| Slides have stopped moving on their own                       | Check the window still says **following the singer**. If it says **ready when you are**, press **start**.                                            |
| It says **this mac is struggling — close other apps**         | Close anything you are not using. Keep going — slides still work.                                                                                    |
| It says **propresenter isn't connected**                      | Check ProPresenter is still open. If it is, carry on manually and tell whoever set this up.                                                          |
| It says **can't hear the audio input**                        | Check the interface is still plugged in. Carry on manually.                                                                                          |
| It says **couldn't get ready**                                | Menu bar icon at the top of the screen → **Restart engine**. Carry on manually while it starts.                                                      |
| It is asking to be activated                                  | This only ever happens when ScreenShepherd is opened, never mid-service. Carry on manually and see [Activating a Mac](/setup/activating) afterwards. |
| Anything else you cannot explain                              | Press **stop** and drive it yourself. Do not try to fix it now.                                                                                      |

## Not sure it is even listening?

Look at the top of the ScreenShepherd window.

* **following the singer** — it is on.
* **ready when you are** — it is off. Press **start**.

## When it moves late

A slight delay is normal, and it is deliberate.

A slide that comes up too early is much worse in a service than one that comes
up a moment late. See [What it will never

## After the service

If something odd happened, write down roughly when. That timestamp is what
makes it findable afterwards. See [After the
