# Running a service

> What to do on a Sunday morning.

## Before the band arrives

    It may already be open. Look for the small bar on your screen, or the icon
    in the menu bar at the top.

  <Step title="Open ProPresenter and put your first song up">
    ScreenShepherd follows whatever is on screen. It needs something to follow.

  <Step title="Check the two lines">
    In the middle of the ScreenShepherd window there are two short lines. Both
    should have a green dot.

    One is your microphone. One is ProPresenter.

    If either is not green, go to [If something looks
    wrong](/sunday/if-something-looks-wrong).

  <Step title="Try one line">
    Press **start**. Sing or say a line into the vocal microphone. Watch the
    slide move.

    Press **stop**, and put the slide back to the beginning. You are ready.

## During the service

Press **start** when the band is ready.

The top of the window tells you what is happening, in plain words:

| It says                  | It means                                        |
| ------------------------ | ----------------------------------------------- |
| **ready when you are**   | Not started yet. Press **start**.               |
| **following the singer** | Working. Slides are moving on their own.        |
| **getting ready…**       | Give it a moment. It is not ready to start yet. |

While it is following, you do not need to do anything. Drive ProPresenter
exactly as you always have — anything you do there is respected straight away.

Press **stop** at the end of the last song.

  You can start and stop without leaving ProPresenter. If shortcut keys have
  been set up on this Mac, they work from any app. Ask whoever set it up, or
  see [Shortcut keys](/setup/shortcuts).

## If it changes song

When ScreenShepherd moves to a different song by itself, a button appears:

> **go back to** *(the song it left)*

Press it if it got the song wrong. It goes back, and it will not pick that song
again for a while.

You can also just choose the right song in ProPresenter. That works too, and it
is often quicker.

## If a bible passage comes up

If someone reads a bible reference out loud during the talk, ScreenShepherd can
put that passage on the screen, then take it away again afterwards.

When it does, you will see a line saying **showing** and the reference. If the
passage is long, **previous** and **next** page through it. **clear** takes it
off the screen.
